Science: Good master, Bad servant

Humans explore, examine and experiment. This urge to know more has led to the formation of a field called science which is everywhere around us. We cannot live without the aid of science in this age of technology. It can amuse and fascinate us all. It has change the face of the world. It has, of course, given many things that benefits but it has also showered many evils upon us. As every coin has two sides, science has bestowed us with development and has also brandished us with destruction.
It is said that science is a good servant but a bad master. A person who makes use of science in correct manner gets its advantage & who misuses it suffers for that. The things around us, from smaller to bigger, are the advantages of science. Human effort has been tremendously reduced due to it. Science has made or life luxurious. It has improved our sixth sense or forecasting abilities as one can now predict a tsunami or an earthquake to occur. It has so much engulfed our lives that nothing can take place in our day to day work without the aid of science. From tiny atoms and molecules to distilled water, it has helped mankind to understand nature. People can now be cured of deadly diseases. It has truly improved our way of living.
Misuse of technology is considered as the major disadvantage of science. Most of the scientific inventions are dangerous to human society in the long run. Science has led to the creation of nuclear energy. Can any one say that the issue of Hiroshima and Nagasaki will never be repeated? We need electricity to enjoy a number of scientific inventions. For producing electricity, we have to depend on natural resources so we are excessively utilizing those resources without thinking about our future generations. Can we ever forget about the Bhopal Gas Tragedy, the painful memory of which still haunts us. Man has become entirely dependent on machines. A day may come when his physical and mental faculties may grow so weak that he may not be able to lift a bag or solve a simple equation. It has given drugs like smack and heroin.
Too much is too bad. Science will be a boon if we take it in sufficient & limited way and most importantly in the right direction, otherwise it will become bane. If everyone follows the proverb “ BE GOOD AND DO GOOD” science will be our friend forever.

Self-Identity through Education

Who am I? Where do I stand? What am I doing? Do I have a place , a position in the society to which I belong? Am I right or am I wrong? Should I or shouldn’t I? These are some of the common questions constantly nagging especially the youngsters of today’s generation. Everybody is striving for success and prosperity in our human society. There is a rat race, a chase between the people and the money. But practically speaking, this strive should be for excellence, not only in the field of economy, but in all spheres of life. And to make a name, an identity for oneself, it is very much essential to be a well-educated human being. When a person is educated; dignity, name and fame would follow subsequently.
A literate is always looked upon, stated high rank, position and status and is praised in the society. Whereas an illiterate is always looked down at in the society. It is said that if a woman is educated , then automatically her whole house-hold is educated. If a person is educated, then he/she will serve the society in a far better manner than an illiterate. He will be able to make judgement between good or bad. He will be able to analyze his situation, his surroundings in a very methodical way. He will be able to ponder over critical, social issues and cast his views upon any matter in a more constructive way.
It should be remembered that a well-educated person will always think about the up gradation of his family, which will directly affect the society and will help in its progress.
Today’s young generation is facing the problem of identity crisis. Only through proper counseling, schooling, socialization and above all guidance, he will be able to get to know more about himself, his strengths and his weaknesses. He will get to know about his inner strength, his potentials and above all he will be able to carve a niche for himself in the society. Accordingly, he will transform his personality, find out his course of life and most importantly, secure his future. Self-Realisation , Self-Recognition , Self- Identity is the need of the hour and it can be achieved only via EDUCATION.

Education: The Liberating Force

“Education makes the people easy to lead, but difficult to drive, Easy to govern, but impossible to enslave” so said Lord Brougham. This is entirely true, for without education a man is a shade better than an animal. After all, why is this education so important for us? This can only be understood if we know what education is. Education is drawing out of mental faculties that are so essential for leading a happy life.
The low level of education among the poor and the downtrodden makes them vulnerable to economic and political exploitation. Though adequate provision has been made in the Constitution, to ensure their empowerment and participation, it seems the fruits of this, have not percolated down to them. The main culprit for this is lack of education, which deprives them of their power to claim their rights. This problem can only be addressed by enligthening the masses, by imparting proper education and thus enabling them to distinguish between good and bad.
The education of masses would awaken their minds to the wonders and mysteries of the universe. This would free them from doubts, superstitions and remove many social evils that are plaguing the society. It would train their intellect to reason logically and not to be carried away by false or illogical promises of politicians or power brokers. In short it would make them civilized, cultured and humane citizens of a proud country.
This would also auger well for the country, as it would strengthen democracy. The people would, in the true sense, be able to elect their leaders. They would be able to appreciate national problems, thus strengthen the hands of the government, rather than be misguided by vested and selfish sectarian interests.
Therefore, the need of the hour is to safeguard our independence. We have just been witness to how a few thousand Englishmen, ruled over this country for over two hundred years for want of an educated population. We should not allow this to happen again. This can only be ensured by imparting proper education to the masses, so that they exercise the right to franchise without fear or favour. This would make us the master of our destiny.

COACHING SCAM

On 22nd Jan, 2012 Bachcho Ki Adalat was triggered off with greater enthusiasm by the students. On this occasion not only the students & their parents made their presence but also noted educationist of Patna University, Prof. Vinay Kanth & Prof. Daizy Narayan also turned up to extend their support towards our protest against coaching scam. Both acknowledged & praised the students for taking the initiative and raising their voices against the coaching scam.
For student, their journey starts right from the beginning in this very social arena. An individual grows as a reflection of the values that he has received from his family, friends and school. Equally important is the role of social guardianship which is played by the society, its people & institutions.
They are taking assistance from coaching institutions, many of which have helped genuinely in students favour. The various courses offered can help a student preparing seriously for competition may require help from time to time; but the recent change in trends of the study pattern tells a different story altogether.
There has been large-scale mushrooming of coaching institutions and also a decline in the quality of students from our state. A big reason for this degradation is coaching institutions, that promise to get one through IIT and medical entrance.
Are these institutions selling a commodity that can be bought at payment of a fair price?
Students' Oxygen Movement is a movement that works towards the benefit of students and supports causes for education to make it the biggest issue. There have been demonstrations and discussions last year to bring transparency. This year too, we have come up with 'Bachchon Ki Adalat', an awareness session that raises students' voice against the injustices due to coaching scam. We are fully prepared to bring in more transparency and flexibility in coaching institutions and make them student friendly this year. As we continue with our fight against coaching scams, we place three basic and genuine demands in students' interest-
1) Coaching fees to be paid on monthly basis.
2) Total number of students enrolled in a coaching institution to be made public.
3) Details of special coaching groups to be published.
We strive to bring a change in the system of education of the society because we feel that education is the solution to many problems.

Significance of Makar Sakranti

Makar Sakranti- an important festival not only of Hindus but is celebrated vehemently by Indians all across India. Actually it is celebrated in the honour of Sun God “Bhaskar”. On this day, devotees take a holy dip in the Ganges and offer their prayers to the Lord. Til and Gur are taken as delicacies by the people on this occasion, which also has many medicinal uses such as providing warmth to the body during the season of biting cold and stomach related ailments.
Historically speaking, on this day Sun, the father visits the house of his son, Shani, who is the lord of Makara Rashi. This symbolizes the importance of special relationship between the father and the son. A part from all this, Makar Sakranti is also the day for taking vows. It is the day for taking new and firm resolutions, better known as well- planned decisions. It is the day to mark a New Beginning.
Makar Sakranti has deep spiritual significance and is rooted in an unshakable divine history. It is a solar event, the date of Makar Sakranti remains constant at 14th January. In Hinduism, the Sun signifies light (knowledge, spirituality and wisdom), unity, equality and true selflessness, the ideals of Karma Yoga. The message spread during this occasion is “one should gradually begin and to grow as the Sun does from this day and perform one’s duties without expectations of rewards.”
The significance begins from this day onwards, the days start becoming longer and warmer and thus, the winter chill starts declining. Traditionally, this has been one of the many harvest days in India. The festival is also referred as Uttarayana as it marks the starting of northward journey of Son. Most of the auspicious things are done during this time.
Makar Sakranti is celebrated in almost all parts of India in varied cultural forms. In Tamil Nadu, it is celebrated as “Pongal’’. In Harayana and Punjab, it is celebrated by the name of “Lohri”. In West Bengal, this festival is known as Pous Sankranti after the Bengali month in which it falls. In Gujrat, people offer thousands of their colorful oblations to the Sun in the form of beautiful kites which has been associated with this festival in a big way. It helps the maintenance of social relationships within the family, caste and community. It has become an internationally well-known event.
During this occasion, many fairs are held, the most famous being the KUMBH MELA, held every 12 years at one of the four holy locations, viz., Haridwar, Prayag, Ujjain and Nasik. Many tribals start their New Year from the day of Sankrant by lighting bonfires, dancing and eating their particular dishes sitting together. Thus, Makar Sankarnti signifies shunning the darkness of delusion and allowing the light within shine brighter.

New Era, New Beginning

New Year starts with new beginnings- new sessions, resuming work after holidays and shedding off the woolens and winter of one’s life to welcome spring. In terms of a new beginning, it is truly said,”well begun is half done”, and this is why we plan the year ahead, or in specific terms, make resolutions, to achieve our goals and end the year on a good note with no stone left unturned.
We have come up with three such resolutions, to plan this year in a fruitful way, achieve our set goals and move on to make education the biggest issue:
Creativity Scholarship- What is education when you can’t lead a life of fulfillment and self-reliance? It is the education that we want to implement in the system as a whole, so that mere issues and obstacles don’t come in the way of fulfillment of the thinkers of today and leaders of tomorrow-Children. Creativity Scholarship enables children to earn through their creativity by making cards, and the money rightfully earned is used for the payment of their school fees, ensuring continuity in their source of education. In this manner, children in their formative years learn to become self-reliant which will help them in their later phase to lead life with great skill and dignity of labor. This year we plan to expand and associate more and more students in the Creativity Scholarship activity and increase the circulation of hand made cards in the society.
No Horn Campaign- In this world, when we primarily need a word of care and a kind gesture from our fellow beings to ensure that despite all evils, we need to embrace life and beauty, why have we started treating each other as machines at places of social interactions? Best example of this social interaction is at roads, when each one of us is heading towards his destination- office, school, bank or home. This experience in the city is becoming bad to bitter. With the amount of horn that is blown, without understanding the fact that the vehicle in front of us is not a mere machine, but is driven by a human being, it feels nothing less than an announcement preceding war between rivals. Just stand by the side of a functional road and you will hear the amount of unnecessary honking which slaps hard on the driver like an abuse, and all you’d want to say is- No Horn please.
No Horn campaign this year attempts to awaken the city and urges its dwellers for a better social interaction with less noise and more communication.
Fight Against Coaching Scam- With the mushrooming of coaching institutions bearing completely unacceptable terms & the increasing confusion & dissatisfaction among students, there lies beneath all the advertisements and big promises of the coaching world, deep rooted dirt, what we call as coaching scam. Commercializing education, prioritizing the payment of full term fees at once without keeping up the quality of faculty, promising 100% result without accounting for the total number of students are some common features of coaching institutions, students have raised their voices against this injustice & have placed viable demands to establish genuine system of education & schooling.
